...The Waiting Room

Our lives are punctuated by waiting rooms- each decision or milestone is marked by bureaucracy, a signing of forms. We are identified by numbers, anything else that makes up our identity is considered irrelevant. We (group concept project) are interested in critiquing how societal institutions enforce codes of behavior and in turn codes of dress. Essentially we are exploring the dilution of identity through institutionalized spaces. The question we are asking is how do we form an identity separate to the societal constructs we navigate through our lives.

Our identity becomes malleable, flowing and ever changing, depending on which societal construct we are currently navigating. Due to this we feel restricted and believe that we can only show small parts of our true selves and identities when situations allow for it to be "acceptable and appropriate".  We are always pulling ourselves in, holding ourselves back, and constantly "waiting" to have the courage to be 100% ourselves and for this to be accepted within society. Because of this conflict our identity leaks out, while we ourselves struggle with the self-inflicted restriction we as society have placed upon ourselves. We, our identities, are therefore also a waiting room, in limbo to society.
